![]() ![]() ![]() Hippocampi were the servants of poseidon, the chariot of poseidon was drawn by hippocampus. They were believed to be the adult versions of sea horses. It swallowed huge amounts of water and spat it out which created large whirlpools swallowing ships. Charybdis took the form of a whirlpool as it dwelled under the water, only its mouth above, open and awaiting the clueless sailors. Late classical writers say that she was once a beautiful sea nymph who was loved by sea god Glaukos but Circe grew jealous and used her powers to transform Scylla into a hideous beast.Ĭharybdis was the other monster near Scylla, the passage between the two was very narrow and only very few sailors could navigate their way past these monsters without being devoured. Scylla was a sea monster who resided the rocks of a narrow strait opposite the whirlpool of charybdis, if ships sailed close to her, six of its men would be devoured by her ravenous heads. ![]() These stories give some interesting ideas for the future piece, for the background being wind related, having a prop of food, they also show some idea towards the personality of these harpies. In Jason and the argonauts they were bird faced women who were sent to punish the king for the ill treatment of his children, they snatched his food from the table and left a disgusting smell. Harpy’s have been considered wind spirits, different stories portray them differently, in Homer’s Odyssey, the are winds that carry people away, in other stories they have been connected with the powers of the underworld. His three heads also provide for interesting design choice as many people have considered the idea that each head might have a separate personality. I chose Cerberus because he’s so different to the hydra in behavior, he guards and protects, following Hades’ orders, whereas the Hydra is just rageful. He was never defeated by Heracles, instead he was fought to exhaustion and passed out. Cerberus was tricked three times, by Heracles’ strength, Orpheus’ music and the Sybil of Cumae’s honey-cake. The hound of Hades guarded the gates of the underworld and prevented the dead from leaving. In mythology, Heracles severed and cauterized the stump in order to prevent more heads from growing. In terms of design, this creates some interesting opportunities. The hydra is described as a giant water-smakelike creature with many heads, once one of the hydra’s head is cut off, it can grow two more in that head’s place, it has poisonous breath and can never die. Whilst originally I set out to find obscure creatures, I was still drawn to the idea of a hydra for its fascinating story and abilities. The caladrius is a mythical creature said to absorb the sickness of humans and fly up to the sun in order to burn it In one story, a man kills the amaroks pups and in return the amarok takes his soul from his body. The amarok is a creature from Inuit mythology, it’s a giant wolf that stalks and devours people foolish enough to hunt alone at night. Whilst this contrast makes each colour seem harsh and almost blockish there is still visible detail within the art.Įach animal has a different shape to them which develops their personality, whether its long and rounded like the serpent or flowing and smooth like the fox.įor my project I will illustrate mythical creatures in the style of Jonna Hytinnen, laid out as an information book. The contrast between the darkness of the black and the bright, shining gold is really effective in drawing the eyes but not overwhelming them. ![]()
